Today, a large number of women take alcohol or other forms of substances for their stress relieving needs, or to cope with boredom from routine life.Â
Women from work place also are found to be increasingly using drugs or alcohol as they begin to experience economic independence, freedom and social relations. Work place stress, or peer group influence lead women to use substances which affect them faster then their male counterparts due to their biological and cultural factors.
Biologically, substance use disorder in women progresses at a faster rate than men due to their physiological differences. Women metabolize alcohol and drugs differently. The fat content in a woman’s body is more which slows down the processing of alcohol and other drugs, causing addiction and co-occurring disorders faster.
Culturally, women experience greater levels of stigmatization due to their traditional societal roles as mothers, caregivers, and often the central organizing factor in their family units. With more and more opportunities for women in employment, the use of alcohol also have steadily increased in many cultures.
They face serious problems like stigma, Trauma, co-occurring disorders, gender inequalities and Motherhood. They tend to develop more shame, blame, guilt, anxiety disorders and depression than men. They become more vulnerable with addiction and can be subjected to sexual exploitation or violence.
Increased cases of trauma, Post traumatic stress disorders, sexual exploitations, and co-occurring disorders are reported from among women alcohol or drug users and they definitely deserve a dignified recovering opportunity and support.
